The Women's World Cup Finals

I didn't watch much soccer, but it wasn't exactly that I didn't like watching soccer.  It was just that I didn't really watch much TV in general.  But if I were to choose to watch something, it'd probably be sports.  Especially something with a big storyline behind it.  Like these World Cup finals.

I don't follow soccer, so I don't know much more than I happen to read, but yeah.  Japan with big upsets, first World Cup final, giving encouragement to disaster victims (and yeah, I hear a lot of stuff like "it's not even that big of a deal, it was only one part of Japan," and maybe the media's just overdramatizing it.  But is that immoral?  Not absolutely.  Although I could be wrong...)?  Then there's America, with dramatic wins to get the country interested in soccer, going for a third title.  I see a lot of: Japan, with its great technical skill and smart defense, against the big, powerful, athletic Americans.  That always makes me laugh.  Is it that obvious of a difference?  I'm expecting to see Space Jam Monstars vs the Looney Toons level difference when I watch the finals haha.  Ok, not that much, but I'm expecting to see a clear difference noticeable by even non-soccer fans.

Who do I want to win?  Hmm, well, now that's a tough one.  I've always been a fan of the underdog stories, so I usually pull for the lower ranked player/team in any game.  And Japan, having never beaten the American team, first time in the cup finals and all that?  I guess I'm rooting for Japan, just to see that story get written.  Of course, being an American, it's not like I'd be disappointed if America won.  Personally, I just want to see a close match.  You know, something like comeback, score a goal in the last minute for the tie, go to penalty kicks kind of close.  I didn't have that much of a preference in this match, but even at times when I was really rooting for one team, I'd rather watch that team win in a close match than win in a blowout.

  1. Oh by the way, if you didn't watch or hear about this game, it was just what I had hoped to see. The American team had so many chances to score, and then finally scored late in the match and it seemed to be over, then Japan scores to take it to extra time, then America scores and it seems it might be over this time, then Japan scores with 3 minutes left, barely avoids letting in another goal and then wins on penalty kicks. It was really epic, if you care for soccer or sports stories.
